Capt. Ts. Dr. Thachnatharen : The First Malaysian to Sweep All Three University Gold Medals

Capt. Ts. Dr. Thachnatharen Nagarajan

Malaysia has witnessed a historic moment, one that has redefined academic excellence and carved a new benchmark for future generations.

Capt. Ts. Dr. Thachnatharen Nagarajan, a military scientist and postdoctoral researcher, has become the first Malaysian to win all three top university gold medals at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate levels.

This extraordinary achievement, never before recorded in the history of Malaysian higher education and of course it needed a special shout-out on our platform as well.

Speaking about the achievements, Dr. Thachnatharen completed all three degrees at the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM), sweeping the institution’s highest awards:

  • Royal Education Award (BSc, 2017) - Presented by His Majesty, The Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV.
  • Anugerah Sarjana Cemerlang Tuanku Canselor (MSc, 2023) - Presented by His Majesty, The Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVI.
  • Anugerah Kedoktoran Cemerlang Tuanku Canselor (PhD, 2025) - Presented by His Majesty, The Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVII.

These three medals are individually remarkable, but winning all of them is a feat previously thought impossible. Yet, he has done it.

To gain more insights on this mind-blowing benchmark, his path was not one paved with comfort. Balancing military training, intense academic work, and research demands required discipline far beyond that of an ordinary student. But he stayed rooted in the values he was shaped by commitment, integrity, and service.

“Every achievement is dedicated to my family, my wife – Dr. Sri Savitha Rupeni, my supervisors, lecturers and my mentors,” he said.

Dr. Thachnatharen’s achievements stretch beyond the classroom with 24 international peer-reviewed journal publications, 1 patented innovation, Vice Chairman of MyCULTURE Malaysia, Youth trainer, motivational speaker, and also currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UCSI University, focusing on nanotechnology, MXene materials, antimicrobial nanohybrids, and advanced lubrication science.

While being in military training, Thachnatharen always find his time publish journals and doing research. Despite his academic excellence, he remains deeply grounded and committed to uplifting others. This man indeed an inspiration and role model for the upcoming generations.

His triple milestone is currently being evaluated by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), solidifying his place in national history.

If officially recognised, Dr. Thachnatharen will become the first Malaysian to hold this extraordinary title. His story is more than an academic victory. It is a message.

A message that background does not define destiny. A message that discipline can transform limitations into achievements. A message that Malaysian Indians and all Malaysians can rise to heights never imagined.

To all students, especially our Malaysian Indian community: your aspirations matter. Every dream is worth pursuing, and that includes yours. In moments of doubt, remember that giving up is not an option. The world is waiting to see what you can achieve!

Thank you for making Malaysia proud of your achievement, Capt. Ts. Dr. Thachnatharen Nagarajan!
