In partnership with Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF), Astro has kicked oA the Eco Schools Programme at a school in Hulu Kelang. The two-year programme, organized and guided by GGAF is intended to integrate sustainability within the school curriculum and empowers students to be responsible in conserving their environment.
Eco-Schools Programme is an internationally-recognized programme developed by the Foundation for Environmental Education and has its roots overseas in countries like the UK, Denmark, and Germany, providing an opportunity for the students to establish an international network. Through this programme, students can help the school to earn the Green Flag award that demonstrates the school’s achievement in sustainability education.
Students involved the Eco-School programme will lead projects under several themes including water management, waste management, and energy conservation among others that are tailored to the school’s unique challenges. Under the guidance of their teachers, the students are expected to manage the project, gather data and present their findings for the Green Flag certification. Sri Themudu Bully Baboo, Chief Green Education Programme OAicer for GGAF said “It is important for us to not only educate the students but also give them the confidence to run the projects and be able to present their findings.
Through these projects, they will be able to ingrain sustainability awareness in their daily lives and promote change within the community.” Funding for the Eco-Schools programme, which costs RM 70,000, comes from Astro’s Rimba Kita Fund. Through collective action, we aim to continue to increase environmental conservation awareness and inspire the next generation of eco-leaders and generate cultural change within Malaysia.
